Straw bale thermal insulation: Paris Habitat commissions Apave

Top News10/13/2020
Just 2 km from the Eiffel Tower, in the heart of the capital, an original building site is taking place. The ITE, the thermal insulation from the outside, uses straw. Paris Habitat is the project owner.

The social landlord chose to use this material to insulate a building that was almost a century old.
Straw has many advantages as an insulator: it stores carbon, is naturally resistant, breathable and insulating. It retains heat in winter and coolness in summer, is low in cost and has excellent fire resistance thanks to its high density.

On this project, almost 1,000 bales of straw were needed to cover the 500m² of walls.
Apave experts were with Paris Habitat from the outset of the project, providing design support, execution documents, inspections and the final report.
Our mission: to prevent the technical hazards of a project carried out using non-standard techniques.

Thanks to its exceptional longevity - around 100 years - and its minimal ecological footprint, straw has many years ahead of it!
